Quick Takeaway

For a quick answer, check the main steps below. Always ensure proper sanitation and optimal temperatures for the best yield.

Reading the Mushrooms

Mushrooms will physically tell you if their environment is wrong. Here is how to translate their signals.

1. Long Stems and Tiny Caps

The Diagnosis: Too much CO2. The mushrooms are stretching out, trying to reach fresh air.

The Fix: Increase your Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) by running your exhaust fan more frequently.

2. Yellowing, Drying, or Cracking Caps

The Diagnosis: Low humidity or direct air drafts hitting the mushrooms.

The Fix: Keep humidity above 85%. Ensure your humidifier is functioning and that fans are not blowing directly onto the fruiting blocks.

3. "Aborts" (Pins that stop growing and turn brown)

The Diagnosis: Usually caused by a sudden drop in humidity, causing the pins to dry out and die. Can also be caused by drastic temperature swings.

The Fix: Maintain stable environmental conditions. Once pins form, they are highly sensitive to drying out.
