Quick Takeaway
For a quick answer, check the main steps below. Always ensure proper sanitation and optimal temperatures for the best yield.
Why Use Filter Patch Bags?
Professional mycologists use specialized polypropylene bags with micro-filter patches. The bag withstands the heat of a pressure cooker, while the filter patch allows the mycelium to breathe without letting in mold spores.
The Packing Process
- Hydrate: Mix your substrate and water. Calculate your hydration to ensure you hit 60% moisture.
- Fill: Load the substrate into the bag. Be careful not to get substrate on the upper inside walls of the bag, as this can interfere with sealing.
- Fold: Gusset fold the bag tightly.
- Sterilize: Place the bags in a pressure cooker at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours. Let them cool overnight inside the sealed cooker.
Sealing the Bags
Once cooled, open the cooker in a clean environment (ideally in front of a laminar flow hood). Add your grain spawn, then use an impulse sealer to seal the top of the bag securely.
